DDB Paris Chlorophyllo
09.03.16 – To promote the new super strong Airways chewing gum Chloromenthol, we created an interactive movie/game based on the cult Mexican wrestling films of the 70′s.
The great guys at DDB Paris came to us with a plan. They had acquired the rights to use footage from four iconic Mexican wrestling films made between 1971-77. They pointed at an image. “You see that blue guy there, that’s Blue Demon. Let’s make him green and we’ll call him Chlorophyllo. He’ll be our perfect hero. He gets his super powers from the Chloromentol gum. We love what you did with Hotel 626. We could make this into an interactive action film.”
Awesome! It was the perfect brief. So we started by looking through the movies, trying to find scenes that we could turn into interactive mini-games. At the same time we also had to figure out a new storyline. We did a re-edit of scenes from all four films: we had found car chases, boss fights, kick-ass midgets, secret laboratories, the super villain Mano Negra…
And came up with our new plot. Mano Negra is building a super army in his secret lab. But the strengthalyzer pod only works on small people, so he needs to steal the secret ingredient from the Chloromethol. Obviously Chlorophyllo learns about his evil plans and gathers his compadres to set out to stop him.
We’re super proud of this one. It was a bit crazy and that’s how we like it. We spent a lot of effort on making all the graphics and interfaces look authentic, as they were part of original footage.
We also stayed true to the original sound design, keeping as much as possible of the original soundtrack and effects. New Mexican voice actors were recorded and added to the mix.
The stupid, simple fun interaction model is a perfect fit for the quirky storyline and 70′s luchador look. Just smash your keyboard as fast as you can. OK, sometimes you have to know which side of it to hit — but even a wrestler would get that.
