In 2012 one of the worlds leading companies within materials technology, Sandvik, celebrates their 150th anniversary. To help them tell the full story of their heritage B-Reel created and developed an interactive experience that takes the visitor on a fantastic journey.

The history is told along a veritable timeline that holds all the greatest milestones and thereby compiles all the fantastic innovations that Sandvik has created into an environment. Innovations that range from gigantic rock drills to delicate ribs for umbrellas. The user is free to control the directions of time and dive into each milestone to get deeper information and a greater understanding for the spectacular solutions Sandvik has created throughout the years.

The environments were created from scratch and represent all the places where you can meet Sandvik’s products, from the deepest ocean to the highest skies. The musical score was created by our friends at Plan8 to heighten the mood of the journey into a epic adventure.

DIST Creative approached us with an idea for a campaign for the Variér Balans chair in the form of an experiment. The chair is designed to promote movement and variation in the body to promote circulation and extended activity leading to better concentration and overall well-being. To prove this claim the campaign’s goal was to measure the brain waves of children indulging into their interests while using the chair and then use data visualization to turn the recordings into a pattern that could be printed as upholstery for the chair.

Accepting this challenge, we took advantage of the learnings made from our research and development project Mind Scalextrics: http://www.b-reel.com/projects/mind-scalextrics/

Using a more advanced headset solution in the form of the Emotiv EPOC Neuroheadset, we were able to measure more precise brainwave patterns to pinpoint levels of concentration. Three children were recruited to come in to their studio to take part in the experiment and work on their favourite subjects while using the chairs and wearing the headset. Feeding that data into a custom built visualizer engine image patterns were created that reflected the changes in the children’s brain activities in real-time. In addition, the visualizer was using graphic presets corresponding to the children’s personal interests while taking inspiration from patterns ranging from classic tapestries to pop-art and contemporary design.

The result was a success as the children worked away and the patterns that emerged onto the screens clearly corresponded to their activity. Each child’s result was finally printed onto fabric to upholster the chairs. Variér Furniture is featuring the project at www.varierbraindesign.com and at international Furniture and Design Fairs where visitors can try the headset on, and create their own brain design.

It was a great experience for the team to take part of. Since it was quite an unusual project in the form of an experiment leaning on a mix of art and technology we had some doubts about the final result but it actually worked extremely well from the first prototype to the final design. But it wasn’t until we saw the children using the headset and we could see these beautiful designs come to life that we knew that we built the right solution. The final designs came out very well, varied but recognizable. It is inspiring to work with a project that is digital in its core but to end up in a very analogue result, something as real as the printed fabric for chairs. The guys at DIST Creative were great to work with, they came to us with a brilliant idea that was not only clever but also turned into something beautiful.

Patrik Gyllström at B-Reel Films directed the films for the site.

Created in partnership with SS+K, www.workconnectsusall.org is part of a campaign for the AFL-CIO showcasing the values that America’s unions share with all working people: hard work and quality craftsmanship, and allows site visitors to explore how every one of us is connected by the work we do. This is the first branded marketing AFL-CIO initiative since 1997. B-Reel created the visual identity for the campaign and created the website, offering each visitor a unique and personal experience through multiple modes of interaction.

The first section focuses on showing a site visitor how the benefits of their work are felt well beyond what they see on a daily basis. B-Reel directed and animated thirteen one-minute spots, each based around a category of the AFL-CIO union. Rendered in vector and delivered through Adobe Flash, each animation plays full screen while retaining sharp lines and crisp edges, and all without heavy bandwidth requirements.

Section two is a data visualization that allows a site visitor to explore how everyone in America is connected through the work they do. By selecting an aspirational theme, a visitor can filter different industries and their workers and view how each job contributes to that theme.

The third and final section launching mid-February, will allow a user to explore how others contribute to their lives each day. Site visitors will be able to explore the people that make up the supply chain that delivers the components of their daily life, from their morning routine, their commute, workday, and personal life.

We worked with BBDO / Instinct Moscow to create this unique, first-person interactive film for IKEA. You’re invited into the kitchens of five very different families, friends and couples, all linked by a common thread. In each kitchen you can jump into the characters’ points of view and experience the story through their eyes.

Alongside hotspots for each of the characters, products and features are also integrated into the films. These can be expanded and ‘saved for later’ using a simple bookmark button that captures them in a little bubble of Smart Solutions.

We went over to Moscow for a huge six day shoot, working together with director Thorsten Herken and production company Action Film. We shot the five kitchens in a warehouse-sized studio and then spent a day on location to film the linking shots. To capture everything we needed quite a variety of camera rigs – everything from an Arri Alexa on a crane to a super-mobile Go Pro in a fish tank.

The majority of the first person footage was shot using head-mounted Canon 7Ds. We went through a few iterations of this custom-built setup before getting it just right! It also created the unusual situation where the camera crew had to not only shoot, but also act. Shooting with cameras mounted to their heads while mixing cocktails, cutting fruits or driving a van, was quite a skill.

Probably the biggest challenge on this project was dealing with the huge quantity of footage. Taking five different scenes with intertwining stories and multiplying them by several points of view resulted in over an hour and a half of footage in the final edits. This then had to undergo post and effects work as well as having around 130 hotspots tracked to products and people.

All this then came together to create a quirky and playful experience In the Kitchen.

Hornstull, a part of southern Stockholm, is being reconstructed, and during the reconstruction period life will be a bit inconvenient for the citizens of the neighbourhood.

To give back to the community, Bonnier Fastigheter – the real estate company that is doing the rebuilding – has installed a piece of interactive art.

Together with the agency Abby Norm we have installed five big screens that will cover the wall of a tunnel. The people that pass through can affect the content represented by a stylized but highly living forest. The most unique way to interact is to create “meetings” with their body movements in front of a main screen equiped with a Microsoft Kinect unit.

When two people are simultaneously registered by the Kinect and get close enough they will breed a meeting represented by a visual symbol in the forest.

There are also ways to interact via posting to Twitter, Google+, Facebook likes wich provides the wonderful, living forest that grows by the second. The forest is represented on the additional our screens where passers by are able to interact and browse through the forest submissions using their hands, also registered by Kinects. Together this will creates a collaborative piece of art that varies colours over the seasons and that can also be viewed and interacted with online.

BBH and Google came to us to help promote the launch of their new music service in a fun and educational microsite experience. The brief was to highlight the 5 main features of Google Music by having each represent different parts of a song that builds as you explore more on the site. The brief was also about pushing the boundaries of music and technology with a purely HTML5 experience.

The coolest part for us was basically experimenting and pushing the limits of how we all view HTML experiences. We used these “worm-like” meandering lines to represent the 5 different features of Google Music and the separate parts of the music track. The lines move and dance across the page to the beat of the song, each with their own distinct personality as they take you to different feature demo videos.

The dynamic lines represent individual music stems, and are dynamically drawn to the HTML5 Canvas based on volume data. The sounds are played through Chrome’s Web Audio API while reacting to pre-analyzed sound data.

Each line is following a designed path while maintaining its own unique characteristic in how it’s wave is generated—some variables include it’s amplitude, smoothness, and the shape of its oscillation. The handling and drawing of these graphics is made possible with the Paper.js vector graphics scripting framework, which runs of top of the HTML5 Canvas.

It was a really fun exploration in visual design, sound design and Javascript animation that all came together really nicely in the end. We basically created a rich animation site in HTML / Javascript. And we did it in about 3 weeks. Creating seamless audio loops in HTML is not an easy task – that and getting the lines to move dynamically with the beats of the music track was a huge success for us.

Be sure to go through all 5 features of the site to get a special treat after viewing the 5th and final feature video. Clicking “play the song” breaks the audio loops and plays the full music track and the lines react accordingly. http://music.google.com/about/tour/

Together with B-Reel Films, we took on the challenging task of creating an interactive video game for Nike and W+K in a month, just in time for Thanksgiving.

Filip Tellander directed 3 of Nike’s top professional athletes through a gauntlet of winter training exercises that the user could in the end play along with. First was world champion wideout Greg Jennings during a 1-day shoot in wintery Green Bay, Wisconsin. Then Alex Morgan, forward for the US womens’ soccer team and Allyson Felix, Olympic gold medalist sprinter came to LA to shoot during the two coldest nights of the year.

In this interactive game, the user is challenged to “Fight Back” against winter through 3 mini-games in a cinematic experience that features the athletes one by one battling through wind, rain and snow. The games are fun, simple, challenging and highly addictive finger drills using the arrow keys to keep pace with the athletes.

Fight winter, help the athletes complete their training and submit your scores to win daily prizes and also get a chance to meet the athletes.

Take a look at: www.fightwinter.nike.com

For the launch of the Start Here project with Google Maps, we also created Out Of Home advertising to support the campaign and promote the launch of indoor Google Maps.

We had multiple placements at the Minneapolis Airport, which included sizes from normal posters to large wall covering prints and a 30 second spot that ran in the airports display network.

Then for International CES 2012 in Las Vegas we created over ten different ads in various sizes with customized messaging based on placement and display location. The placements ranged from still ads on the top of taxies up to 30 second 4k screens at the Las Vegas Airport. During CES the ads could be seen all along the Las Vegas strip, Las Vegas Airport, inside major casinos and in 48,000 MGM hotel rooms.

The visual approach of these OOH ads is a continuation of the graphical style created for the Start Here campaign. We used similar illustration elements as on the website, but created specific elements that connected the ad’s more closely with their display location.

Want to level up your Google Maps skills? B-Reel and Google worked together to create a playful and helpful experience that explains the key features of Google Maps in an interactive way.

Start Here is an interactive journey through the key features of Google Maps. Most people know Google Maps, but there are useful features that aren’t that well known, such as creating personal maps with locations, photos, and links, getting driving and biking directions, exploring the world using street view and Indoor Maps.

We organized these features in to simple and informative demos. The user can explore these features on their desktop browsers, tablets and mobile devices. We wanted to make sure that all users have the opportunity to experience each of the features, no matter what device the user enters the experience with.

Some features of Google Maps are only available in the Google Maps Android app and vice versa. To tackle this problem we recreated the Android UI in HTML5, which allows users to interact with the app directly in their browser. On the mobile site, we created simple videos that show core desktop only features. To make the experience more than just a product walkthrough, we created illustrations for all of the demos. The illustrations extend the story of each demo beyond the display surface and gives us an environment and a situation that users can relate to without taking too much focus away from the actual product.

To animate these illustrations we used the latest HTML5 technology. The paper like folding animations are all achieved by code using the three.js library, which gave us a lighter experience and super smooth animations. Together with the sound design we are able to create a simple world around the phone that helps us tell a stronger story about each of the features and how they can benefit the users in their daily lives.
